LECA Philosophy on Coordination
Unlike classic command-and-control coordination approaches, using a
combination of facilitation, negotiation, constructive feedback,
and group participation usually results in better and more sustainable
outcomes when dealing with techies. Techies like to be involved in fact-finding and
problem-solving efforts. They prefer to play a significant part in decision-making, and
rarely respond well to orders or directives based upon what they perceive as
"soft" or faulty logic/reasoning.
Don't get us wrong, a techie leader can't afford to make all
decisions "by committee," and using a facilitation approach
requires better coordination skills than does command-and-control management. However,
if you want the best results with techies, you will increase your chances of success
by cultivating and employing a healthy and proportionate
mix of all of the aforementioned skills. Finding the
right mix of coordination approaches and techniques takes patience and attention to
detail — there's
a lot of trial and error involved.
That is why we at Leader's Edge CA feel so strongly about
augmenting your learning and development experience
with ongoing support through individual or group coaching, whenever and wherever
possible. These skills take time to learn and apply correctly. Having a qualified and
experienced coach/mentor available to help you "learn the ropes" in a
very practical way, without
the embarrassment and potentially disastrous outcomes associated with massive
project/program failure,
is both cost and time effective, especially long-term.
