What is Coaching?
Coaching is a collaborative process, a partnership,
in which you and a qualified coach
work together to help you achieve greater success in whatever you want to accomplish.
The exact nature of this collaborative
relationship depends upon your needs and desires. It may include any or all of the
following (just to name a few):
- Goal setting and planning
- Assessment of your abilities, skills, and knowledge base
- Personal and professional mentoring
- Encouragement and motivational support
- Discussion of problem-solving options
- Opportunities to practice skills in a safe environment
- Education (to acquire new skills or enhance existing skills)
Your coach will spend a lot of time listening to you, but that's
not all. Your coach will:
- Help you define and clarify your personal and professional goals,
and then hold you accountable for reaching them;
- Probe to identify the underlying root of issues/challenges that
you are facing;
- Guide you through the often shark-infested waters of business
and people issues;
- Decompose seemingly complex situations and issues into simpler,
more basic components or concepts that are easier to wrap your brain around;
- Encourage you to achieve your goals through pertinent action (especially
in the face of adversity);
- Challenge and push you (when needed) to be the best you can be;
- Help you identify and overcome obstacles that impede your progress;
and
- Help you appreciate the humor in almost any situation.
Bottom line:
A coaching relationship is a collaboration that offers you an opportunity
to get the support and expert advice you need when you need it.
